Sunday 10-11-2009

On Sunday, we went to SF zoo with some friends.

Henry knew most animals now and were still very curious about them.

Last time he was 6 months old and could not recognize most of the animals.

The weather was the same as it was last time, cloudy and cold.

10-4-2009 Bike Ride

It looks like a good day for a ride. It was a bit chilly though.
Today another friend joined the ride, Kelvin, who is a dentist.
According to him, he used to ride bike long time ago, and stopped riding after marriage.

Eddie and I rode to meet Kelvin near his home. It is about 5 mile distance.

Unfortunately, Eddie got a flat tire again. He noticed it before the ride started and decided to continue it. He stopped the ride earlier than us.

Kelvin and I rode the bikes on the same trail as I did last time.

GMAT preparation ...

Chapter 3:

- Make sure that the sentence has both a subject and a working verb.

- If you can remove a phrase from the sentence, and the sentence still makes sense, the phrase is likely to be a middleman or warmup.

- Even though they represent groups, collective nouns are almost always considered singular.

- When you look for the subject, do not forget to look after the verb: the subject and the verb could be inverted.

- Confusing subjects are more often singular than plural. Therefore, they usually require singular verb forms.

Sentence Correction by Manhattan GMAT... hopefully finish in two- three weeks.

I will try to note down some summary .

Extracted from the book,

Chapter 1
- Do not rewrite the sentence in your own words! You must choose the best answer choice from among those available.

- Usually, the easiest slits to spot are at the beginning or end of the answer choices.

- Most sentence Correction problems test multiple issues of grammar and style. During the exam, you need only one path to the right answer.

- Make sure that the answer you choose works in the sentence as a whole.

Chapter 2
- Even though a sentence may sound natural, it may not be grammatically correct according to the rules of SWE.

- The right answer will always clearly reflect what the author meant to say.

- Little words, such as helping verbs, are extremely important to the meaning. Do not overlook them.

- Sometimes, changing the position of a single word can alter the meaning of an entire sentence.

- Words that are connected in a sentence, such as subjects and verbs or pronouns antecedents, must always make sense together.

- If two words in a GMAT sentence mean the same thing, check the sentence for redundancy. Only one of the words may be necessary.

- If you can express an action as either a verb or a noun, pick the verb. It will be shorter and stronger.

- The verb is the "engine" of a sentence. By picking a verb over a noun or adjective, you are making the engine stronger.

- Since adjectives are designed to modify nouns, they often do so more concisely than longer phrases.

- In some situations, the verb to be is unnecessary. Run an "Elimination BE" to get rid of excess occurrences of be.

- Avoid making the sentence too short. You might change the meaning of the sentence dramatically.

- Certain small words and phrases, such as That after a verb or That of /Those of, may be essential in the sentence.

- As you apply the Concision principle, avoid redundancy and wordiness, but don't make it too short.

Podcasts

I have been thinking to check out podcasts in Itune for a while.

Finally I did it and realized there are useful brodcasts.

- Marketplace by APM one of my favorites.

- JapanesePod101.com - I listened to one of the conversations today and it was straight forward and easy to understand.

Now I have something other than music while walking after lunch.

Bluetooth headset - Plantronics 360

While riding on the bicycle, I cannot hear the phone ringing due to the wind, surrounding noise.

I decided to get a bluetooth headset, bought one - Plantronics 360.
The communication seemed to work well when I tried it at home.
Both sides can hear clear and loud.

A little discomfort when putting on the ear.
Overall, it is not bad.

Flat tire

I bought a used Schwinn Bike last month for 50 bucks.

This month I decided to start to ride bike with my neighbor (Eddie). He already rode to work for approximately 3 months.

Two weeks ago, it was my first time to ride a long distance. Riding time is about 1.5 hrs 1 way. Starting from intersection of Valpey Park Ave and Grimmer Blvd to the intersection of Zanker Rd and E Trimble Rd.

The ride today (8/23) was as good as it could be.
First we start from the same intersection, then at S Grimmer Blvd and Paseo Padre Pkwy, turn right. Along Paseo Padre Pkwy to Mission blvd, Eddie planned to ride up to slope but I was a bit exhausted after the initial ride.

So we headed towards Warm Spring Blvd, and towards our destination.

While on the trail near 880 and close to 237, something happened.

Eddie rode quite fast and I tried to catch him. But the harder I tried the more distance is between us. Finally my rear tire started to have more friction to the ground.
Stop the ride, and find there were some kind of plant seeds with very sharp end. There are several seeds on both front and rear tires. Eddie was ahead of me but his tires got the same problems.
The location is very close the the Borders near Ranch Drive and McCarthy Blvd in Milpitas CA.
We just waited for Hsinni and Eva(Eddie's wife) to come and while waiting, have a cup of ice coffee.

It was quite an experience.

Today we had a gathering at our home.

Iphone 3 GS

About 1 month ago, firstly I upgraded to a LG Vu. The screen is quite small and the interface was not very friendly. Then I exchanged it to a LG Flip phone.

In mid-June, Apple announced that they will upgrade current Iphone 3G. I have been debating to buy it because of the 30 dollars data plan.

Finally, I purchased an Iphone 3GS this week. I now understand why Iphone is a success now. The Iphone is just convenient to use except I am still not used to the touch-screen keyboard.

1 useful application is YouTube on the go. Occasionally I will be with Henry alone. If he is too active, we can watch some free shows such as Sesame St or cartoons. He will stay quietly for a while.
Overall, Iphone is worth the money. Next, I may try to find on how to make iphone apps.
